Independence Day of the Republic of Guatemala
Celebration of Independence Day September 15 is held Guatemala. The achievement of independence finally ended the colonial rule on the territory of the country, which continued for almost 3 centuries. The annual celebration of this date demonstrates patriotism and pride in striving for sovereignty.
Colonization of Guatemala by the Spanish began in 1523 under the leadership of Pedro de Alvarado. The local Indians of the Quiche tribe resisted the conquerors, but the conquistadors still captured the main town of the Humarkah tribe a year later and burned it down along with the nobility to confirm their victory. Later, the Spaniards began to mine precious metals on the territory of Guatemala, create plantations and establish exports. In 1564, the Captaincy General of Guatemala was created.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the Spanish colonies embarked on the path of struggle for independence. In September 1821, the Mexican Empire declared its independence, and Guatemala became a part of it. Two years later, Guatemala, together with other provinces, announced the creation of its own sovereign state, which did not last long. But it is the year 1821 that is considered the starting point of the independent years of Guatemala.
The name of the country – Guatemala – translates as “a place where many trees grow”. Guatemala is the most populous country in Central America. 24 languages are spoken here, 23 of them are of Mayan origin, and each language is recognized by law.
