Day of the holy great martyr and healer Panteleimon
Saint Panteleimon in Christianity, he is considered the patron saint of warriors and doctors. Memorial Day it is celebrated every year on August 9. The Great Martyr is known as a healer from Nicodymia, a student of the famous physician Euphrosyne. Although he studied at a pagan school, he later began to regularly attend Christian meetings and was baptized, changing his name from Pantoleon to Panteleimon.
His first miracle was the resurrection of a boy bitten by a snake. The prayer of the saint revived the child, and the poisonous animal flew to pieces. Panteleimon devoted the rest of his life to the sick, suffering, beggars and Christian prisoners, until Emperor Maximian found out about him.
Since the saint refused to become a court physician and serve pagan idols and healed a weakened man in the name of God in front of the ruler, he was tortured with red-hot tin and sent to a circus with wild animals. However, they bowed before the great martyr, so the emperor ordered his execution. Even the soldiers fell to their knees when the sword did not cut the head, but softened it. After that, Panteleimon prayed, and a voice from heaven called him. Only then was the saint executed. Since 1616, a part of his hardened blood has been kept in one of the monasteries of Madrid. Every year on August 9, it becomes liquid without human intervention.
The Great Martyr Panteleimon was prayed to in Kievan Rus since the twelfth century. Prince Izyaslav went into battle wearing a helmet with the image of the saint. On this day, services are held in all Christian churches in memory of the holy martyr.
