Every year Sumyan is celebrated on the first Saturday of September City Day Sumywhich was founded in 1655.

The founding of the city was influenced by the sad consequences of the liberation struggle of 1648-1652, led by Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. According to the royal decree issued in July 1655, peasants and Cossacks began to move from Kyiv region to Left Bank Ukraine. At that time, under the leadership of Ataman Kondratiev, the Cossacks built defensive structures on the site of present-day Sumy, which marked the beginning of settlement of the area by settlers.

At first, the settlement was called Sumyna Sloboda. It was renamed Sumyn in 1656, when it was granted city status. But over time, the letter “n” disappeared, and from the 60s of the 17th century. the city is called Sumy.

Since 1939, Sumy has been a city of regional significance.

• The origin of the name of the city has different explanations. The most reliable assumption is from the names of the Suma and Sumka rivers. Some researchers associate the name with the verb “to grieve”, referring to the feelings of people who were forced to leave their native lands. There is a myth that settlers pulled out three hunting pouches with gold coins from the bottom of the Sumka River. This became the reason for depicting them on the symbols of the city. And in 2008, a symbolic monument “Bag” was installed in the center of Sumy.
