Crossword birthday

Every year on December 21, the world celebrates Crossword birthday. The father of this exciting game was a newspaperman from New York – an Englishman by origin, Arthur Winn.

At the request of the “New York Word” publication in 1913, he invented a new game that should interest as many readers as possible of various professions, statuses and interests.

Mr. Winn applied a completely new approach to this task – by composing words in the form of strips (from cells) that crossed each other and complemented each other, like a cross-word puzzle.

Many people do crosswords all over the world, and the most famous of them are the authors of the biggest crosswords:

  • Zvonko Yanan – his crossword consists of 8469 words and forty thousand cells.
  • Frenchmen Jeanne Louise and Guy Brut, who created a crossword puzzle on paper, the length of which reached five meters, and the width – three meters. It consisted of 18,000 words and 50,000 cells.
  • The Belgian Roger Bowkart is one of the best crossword puzzle creators. His crossword became the largest crossword in the world. Roger Bowkart devoted almost 4 years to this work. 2,734 pages contained questions of up to 50,400 words, and the crossword puzzle itself was quite large – 31 meters long and 53 meters wide.

Today, the world of crosswords is extremely diverse: classic, Scandinavian or scanword, cyclic (cyclocrossword), chainword or linear, Hungarian (filword), English, American, Estonian and keyword (keyword, cipher crossword). So everyone can choose the best option for themselves to spend an evening with pleasure, solving encrypted words on their own or in a fun company, which makes this game even more exciting.
