World Ukulele Day
February 2, 2011 was celebrated for the first time Ukulele Day (World Ukulele Day), an international holiday in honor of a miniature musical instrument with a unique sound. The ukulele is often called the Hawaiian guitar.
The homeland of the stringed instrument is the Portuguese region of Madeira, where it was first produced in the 19th century. and called machete da bracha.
The original guitar was brought to the Hawaiian Islands by Portuguese immigrants at the end of the 19th century. Local residents called her ukulele, that is, “jumping flea.” Such a strange name of the musical instrument is related to the characteristic jumping movements of the musician’s fingers on the strings.
The four-stringed instrument became especially popular during the reign of King Kalakaua. Back then, the ukulele was played at every state gathering.
At the beginning of the 20th century The ukulele became an important instrument in the creation of jazz music. And in 1915, at the San Francisco Music Festival, the enchanting performance of the Hawaiian band made the small guitar famous throughout the world.
Goal Ukulele of the day – to draw the attention of the society to the unique sound of the musical instrument and to encourage everyone who wants to learn to play the incredible mini-guitar.
