World Refugee Day

What is this event?

On June 20 every year, an important event is celebrated – World Refugee Day. This date was initiated by the United Nations on December 4, 2000. The event was combined with the International Day of African Refugees, which has been celebrated on the same day since 1969.

Refugee Day in Ukraine

Back in 2014, hundreds of thousands of people in Ukraine were forced to leave their homes due to the Russian occupation of Crimea and some areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. And in 2022, after the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, at least 7 million Ukrainians became refugees, receiving asylum in many European countries, the USA, Canada, etc.

The purpose of Refugee Day

Refugee Day aims to draw society’s attention to the difficulties of people who are forced to flee the Motherland due to conflicts and/or a low standard of living; emphasis on the strength of character of refugees; bringing humanity to compassion and improving their stay in foreign territory.

Today in our world, about 70 million people have been forced to leave their native country or have been internally displaced. The lion’s share of refugees flee from Africa, Afghanistan and the Balkan Peninsula.
