World Engineering Day

What day is it?

World Engineering Day is a fairly young holiday, which is celebrated every year on March 4. Its purpose is to draw public attention to the importance of engineering and the engineering profession in the sustainable development program introduced by UNESCO. Society must understand that the achievements of engineering and modern technologies occupy one of the most important places in the further effective development of humanity.

How did the idea of celebrating World Engineering Day come about?

Despite the fact that the holiday was born quite recently, it has certain historical prerequisites for its creation. Celebration World Engineering Day closely related to the UN Resolution on sustainable and sustainable development, as well as to the goals in the regions, in the achievement of which the engineering society plays almost the most fundamental role.

Resolutions 70/1

The prerequisite for the introduction of the holiday was the adoption in 2015 of Resolution 70/1, which proclaimed 17 Goals for permanent and sustainable development in the fields of economy, social relations, environmental stability, and world peace. The importance of engineering in achieving these goals is difficult to overestimate. After all, it is the representatives of this profession who are able to implement such systematic and technological solutions that will contribute to the fastest possible implementation of the UN goals in the regions.

What areas need sustainable development? Energy, water resources, the system of cities and villages, the fight against natural disasters and emergency situations – this is only a small list of those areas of human activity that need solutions. Another issue that needs to be resolved is the problem of inequality, which is caused by unequal access to currently available technologies among different segments of the population.

First professional holiday – World Engineering Day – engineers noted on March 4, 2020. Since then, an annual celebration has been planned.

The 40th session of the UNESCO General Conference was held in autumn 2019. It was this session that became decisive in the recognition of such a field as engineering, engineering sciences, and engineering. After all, at that time March 4 was declared the World Day of Engineering and Sustainable Development. The session was attended by the organization VFITO – the Federation of Engineering and Technical Organizations, whose representatives suggested celebrating the Day of Engineering on the birthday of the Federation. It is worth saying that in 2018 this organization celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The purpose of the holiday was to celebrate the achievements of engineers, who are of primary importance in the development of the life of modern humanity.

World Engineering Day logo

This holiday can boast of its personal image. It is a layer painted in 17 colors that symbolize the goals of the United Nations, which are included in the program of sustainable development for the period up to 2030. The colors used to paint the central part of the image mean sustainable development in the fields of energy, water resources, innovative technologies and modern infrastructure. These areas occupy a central place in the global development of humanity and require the intervention of engineering as much as possible.

Engineering as a science is important, because the world needs specialists who have excellent technical knowledge and can implement their skills for the benefit of our planet.

After the holiday was introduced, dozens of letters were sent to the World Federation of Engineering and Technical Organizations in support of this idea. And this is not surprising, because today there are more than 20 million engineers on Earth, who make a significant contribution to the development of modern technologies. It is worth noting that the Resolution was signed by all states that are part of UNESCO, as well as an additional 40 countries.

Why is this event important?

In the Resolution on introduction World Engineering Day the main areas that require the constant participation of workers in this field are listed.

  • Engineering is widely used in such a field as supporting changes in the climate systems of our planet. Modern technologies are used to combat various natural disasters, such as fires, floods, cyclones, etc.
  • Today, it is difficult to imagine economic growth in the world without engineering. It is of undeniable importance in the development of infrastructure, energy and digital networks.
  • It is engineers who develop innovative technologies designed to improve the quality of life of every person.
