Memory of Saint Akila

The Orthodox Church celebrates July 27 every year the memory of Saint Akila – the apostle from seventy.

Aquila lived in Rome in the 1st century, had a wife named Priscilla. During the reign of Emperor Claudius, Jews were expelled from the capital, then the married couple moved to Corinth. There the saint met the apostle Paul and became his disciple, being baptized together with his wife. Later, the holy apostle instructed Aquila and Priscilla to go to Ephesus with the preaching of the Gospel. The husband and wife briefly returned to Rome after the death of Claudius. Later, they went to spread the faith of Christ in Heraklia, where Aquila was a bishop, and Priscilla was his faithful assistant. Unfortunately, their life ended in torment: the married couple was killed by pagans.
