Memorial Day of the Venerable Matrona of Constantinople

The Day of Remembrance of the Venerable Matrona of Constantinople is celebrated on November 22. She was born in the Eastern Roman Empire around 392 in the city of Pergia Pamphylia. Matron of Tsargrad or Jerusalem was a Christian ascetic. The girl was married to a rich man named Dometian. After the birth of their daughter Feodotia, the family moved to Constantinople.

At the age of 25, Matrona constantly visited the Temple of God, prayed and moaned about her sins. Here the woman met the pious old women Evgenia and Susanna. The matron had a prophetic dream, so she decided to give her daughter to be raised by an old woman, cut her hair herself and went to the Vassian monastery. So that the monks would not guess that there was a woman among their brothers, the Matron called herself the eunuch Bavila, kept silent and worked constantly.

Once, Reverend Vassian saw in a dream that Vavila was actually a woman. The same dream was dreamed by the abbot of the Anakiu monastery. The monk called Matrona and began to question her. The woman told the truth about her husband’s persecution. Vassian sent Matrona to a women’s monastery in the city of Yemes, where she later became the abbess of the monastery. When Dometian learned about this, he began to look for his wife. Matrona had to hide in Jerusalem, on Mount Sinai, in Berita in a pagan temple. Here she converted many people to the Christian faith. The woman died around 492.
