Day of the walrus
Walrus Day is celebrated annually on November 24 since 2008. It was founded at the request of the World Wildlife Fund.
Walruses are one of the largest mammals living in the northern part of our planet. At the end of autumn (November 24) the walruses migrate. They leave their home on the shores of the Chukchi Sea and go to winter in the Bering Strait. During their journey, these mammals become much more vulnerable and often need assistance.
By establishing Walrus Day, conservationists are trying to draw the public’s attention to the problem of decreasing their population and encourage people to treat nature more humanely.
One of these problems is climate change. Global warming leads to a decrease in the ice cover of the globe. As a result of this, walruses are forced to change places for their parking, and therefore many representatives of this species die.
