Day of sled dogs

Every year February 2 is celebrated in many countries of the world Day of sled dogs (Sled Dog Day). For a long time, they were the only reliable means of transporting people and goods in the harsh weather conditions of the arctic regions, until the snowy expanses were conquered by other modes of transport.

Information about the origin and founder of the event is unknown. On this very day in 1925, serum was delivered by dog sled relay to the remote town of Nome in Alaska, where a diphtheria epidemic broke out at that time, and bad weather blocked all means of transportation. Medicines have saved many people’s lives.

Humans have been using dog sleds for transportation for thousands of years. Conquering both poles of the planet and many polar expeditions could not do without hardy and courageous malamutes, huskies and other representatives of sled dogs. During the gold rush in Alaska, four-legged animals covered thousands of kilometers of difficult roads to transport mail and provisions to gold miners on bunks.

During the celebration, there is an opportunity to tell the world public about the devotion of these animals to people and their courage. Volunteers draw attention to the problems of homeless and sick dogs, and also call to protect them from cruel treatment.
