Darwin Day (International Day of Science and Humanism)
Every year, the world celebrates February 12 Darwin Day or International Day of Science and Humanism. The date of the celebration was chosen in honor of the birth of the famous scientist Charles Darwin (February 12, 1809). Dr. Robert Stephens was the first to initiate the holiday in 1995. Subsequently, his idea was picked up by Professor Massimo Piglucci (in 1997) and Amanda Chesworth (in 2000).
Charles Darwin was an English naturalist scientist, the founder of the theory of evolution and the theory of natural selection. Darwin was fond of natural sciences, studied flora, fauna and geology, trying to give everything a rational explanation.
Darwin Day (International Day of Science and Humanism) aims to encourage humanity to the principles of scientific thinking, curiosity and intellectual courage. The holiday is dedicated not only to the scientist’s ideas, but also to the spread of science in general.
The event is actively celebrated in scientific and educational institutions, organizing thematic conferences, symposia, competitions, festive parties, etc.
