Bra birthday

It is difficult to imagine the life of modern women without a bra. Therefore, every year on September 3, the world celebrates the day of its creation – Bra birthday. It was on this day in 1914 that the American inventor Kares Crosby (Mary Phelps Jacob) received a patent for her invention. It was a design of handkerchiefs and colored ribbons. All women used rigid corsets until now. The husband of the inventor, who was then working in a firm that made corsets, offered his wife’s invention to his management, and they bought the patent for $1,500.

In the 20s of the XX century. bras were sewn from corset fabrics. In the early 1930s, Ida Rosenthal and her husband started the production of bras with different cup sizes and elastic straps in the United States. In 1932, the shape of the cups was changed, and in 1935, special pads were inserted into the cups, which add magnificence to the breasts. At the same time, the classification of sizes was introduced – from A to D. With the invention of nylon in 1938, bras also began to be made from synthetic materials.

The name “bra” appeared before the invention itself – in 1905 in Vogue magazine and literally meant “support”. The colloquial name “bra”, which is a reduced form of “bust bodice”, appeared a little later and is still used today.

  • During the First World War, the American military command appealed to women to abandon corsets, which at that time had many metal inserts. This helped to save 28 thousand tons of metal, which was enough for the construction of two warships.
