At least one day a year to remember the cleanliness of the environment calls World day without plastic bags, which is celebrated annually on July 3. On this day, it is recommended to abandon the use of plastic or polyethylene products and replace them with alternative eco-goods: paper bags and stylish reusable bags.

The importance of World No Plastic Bags Day

The event was launched to draw society’s attention to the global problem of littering the planet with plastic waste, which is almost non-degradable. Spreading information about the possibility of replacing hazardous material with ecological and budget solutions will help to realize the devastating impact of its use and to form new environmentally friendly behavior in people.

Why is it important to abandon plastic bags?

• Every year, one Ukrainian uses approximately 500 polyethylene bags, while EU residents need 90.
• The annual volume of used bags in the world is 5 trillion, and ocean waters become heavier by 8 million tons due to plastic containers.
• It takes up to 200 years for polyethylene to decompose, and 400 for plastic.
• Almost 1 million birds and 100,000 animals die every year from plastic waste.

More than 40 countries of the world have announced a complete or partial rejection of such products. At the beginning of June 2021, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law limiting the use of plastic bags in Ukraine.
