Independence Day of the Republic of Cuba
January 1 is celebrated in Cuba Independence Day of the Republic Cuba. Before that, the country was under the rule of Spain from 1492 to 1898, and after the Spanish-American War, it fell under the protectorate of the United States for four years. Already on January 1, 1902, Tomas Estrada Palma came to power, who became the first president of the independent Republic of Cuba and held power for 31 years.
In 1933, a military coup took place, as a result of which the country was headed by Fulgencio Batista. The revolution of 1959 led to another coup, and a political party led by Fidel Castro seized power. Since 1961, it has been announced that Cuba is becoming a country focused on a socialist path of development. The American administration did not like this policy, so an economic embargo was imposed on Cuba. To support his power, Castro turned to the USSR for help, which immediately provided financial and military support.
In 2014, relations between the USA and Cuba were renewed, but the socialist orientation of the island republic remains unchanged.
