Finnish Language Day

It is celebrated on April 9 every year Finnish Language Day or Michael Agricola Day (Finnish Language Day). The event was started in 1960. The date of the celebration was chosen in honor of the death anniversary of Mikael Agrigola, the founder of the literary Finnish language, who died in 1557.

In Finland Finnish Language Day – National holiday. Until 1978, it was called only Agricola Day. In 1980, the Finns formed their own tradition of raising the national flag annually on April 9.

Michael Agricola – bishop, author of the first book in the Finnish language – alphabets. He also translated the New Testament for the Finnish people, making a significant contribution to culture.
