Eve of Ivan Kupala

Kupala holiday start celebrating on the night of July 6-7. Our ancestors celebrated it even before the baptism of Russia, in the times of paganism, when they sincerely believed in the forces of nature.

Traditions and rites on the Eve of Ivan Kupala

IN the eve of the Ivan Kupala holiday boys and girls plunged into the Kupala night filled with mysterious and magical properties. According to legends, it is on this night that the fern blooms in the forest. Many brave men went to the forest to find her. Whoever is lucky enough to see a fern blossom will get a treasure. However, evil forces may be encountered on the way, which will hinder the seeker of happiness in all kinds of ways.

Young people perform numerous bathing rituals. Girls collect flowers and herbs, weave wreaths from them, insert lighted candles and lower them into the water, trying to see their groom in them. The boys light a big fire, over which they jump in pairs, holding hands, or alone. Whoever jumps over it without touching the flame will be happy.

On this day they started bathing. Fire and water on the Kupala night have magical powers and have a cleansing effect on the body and spirit.

Day of the sun

On this day, the Day of the Sun is also celebrated. They make two stuffed animals – Kupalo and Morena. Boys make Kupalo, and girls make Morena. They are dressed in men’s and women’s clothes. When the evening comes to an end, the stuffed animals are burned or drowned in the river.
