World cleaning day
What day is it?
World cleaning day, which is celebrated every year on the third Saturday of September, is a global event that has united the inhabitants of different countries around the world with the goal of cleaning the planet from garbage. The purpose of the campaign is to draw attention to the problem of waste, including garbage on the water. In 2022, World Cleanup Day will be celebrated on Saturday, September 17.
The event is not celebrated with festive and solemn events, but with waste cleaning and mapping. Cleaning up the environment takes place in almost every corner of the world.
How did the idea to celebrate World Cleaning Day come about?
The first World Cleanup Day took place on the third Saturday of September in 2018. Prior to that, there were already major measures to clean our planet of garbage and waste. However, it is the World Cleaning Day that has such a global character, as it has united up to 5% of the population of our planet, which is about 400,000,000 people.
Previously, attempts were made to attract a large number of people to clean up the planet, especially after serious disasters: floods, fires, earthquakes, etc.
Local and international public associations, aid societies, various commercial, state and non-commercial organizations usually participate in such actions. Debris and waste removal also includes decontamination of mines, cleaning of coastal areas, forest strips, park areas, etc.
World Cleanup Day does not have any one governing branch and is a decentralized action managed by various organizations that themselves participate in global cleanup actions. Among the largest organizers of the World Cleaning Day, it is worth noting the association Let’s Do It! World (translated from English “Numo, let’s do it! World!”). This is an Estonian organization that managed to involve more than 50,000 Estonian residents in cleaning. As a result of their work, more than 10,000 tons of waste were removed from the country. The action had a mass character and became a kind of model for similar events in other countries of the world.
The Federation of Young Leaders and Entrepreneurs became the largest organizer of the World Cleaning Day held at the global level. It was this organization that assumed the main responsibility for organizing activities to clean our planet from garbage in 2018. At that time, about 160 countries and more than 17,000,000 people took part in the cleanup. As a result of the action, more than 80,000 tons of garbage were collected.
Fewer words and more action
It was under this slogan that the World Cleaning Day was held in 2020. Despite the difficult situation, the movement was successful all over the world. Germany, Indonesia, France, Iran, Tanzania have achieved particular success in cleaning the Earth from garbage.
Germany
Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the cleaning campaign held in 2020 became the most successful in Germany. In total, 1,300 clean-ups took place across the country. And this is 2 times more than in 2019.
The work focused on individual cleanings and had a really strong support in major cities including Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Berlin. The mass media joined the action, helping to attract participants.
Indonesia
In 2020, 4.2 million volunteers took part in the World Cleanup in Indonesia. This is significantly less than in 2019 due to problems with the pandemic. Nevertheless, several million Indonesians worked selflessly to clean up the planet. On a positive note, Indonesians did not just have one day of cleaning in 2020, they had a campaign for seven days.
Iran
In Iran, the main focus of the 2020 campaign was on waste from cigarette butts, as it is the biggest problem in the country. “The campaign was a success in Iran because we didn’t expect such a large number of participants due to the pandemic,” said Nima Zare, who joined the Let’s Do It! campaign. in 2012.
Local mass media, including one of the most popular Iranian TV channels, also joined the action.

Contact the organizers through the official World Cleaning Day website and they will help you get started.
- At the second stage, you can organize a public or separate (private) event in your community. Be ready on the third Saturday of September to clean the Earth of garbage.
