Palau Independence Day

The Independence Day of the Republic of Palau, located in the South Pacific Ocean, near the Philippines, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, is celebrated on October 1.

After the Second World War, in 1947, Palau became part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. While under the administration of the United States of America, Palau adopted a new constitution in 1981. The Treaty of Free Association was signed between the two states in 1982 and entered into force on October 1, 1994, making Palau an independent country.

Palau Independence Day is the most important event of the year in the country, dedicated to the acquisition of sovereignty. The main part of the celebration is concentrated in Ngerulmuda – the capital of the state on the island of Bebelthuap. On this day, events are organized, which include cultural events and symposiums: the president of the republic delivers a welcome speech, a boat race is organized, film festivals are held and the final event is fireworks.
