Federated States of Micronesia Independence Day
Independence Day of the Federated States of Micronesia is celebrated on November 3. They acquired the status of a separate state in 1986 after signing a free association with the United States.
Currently, Micronesia consists of four states that are located on more than 600 islands. Previously, this territory belonged to the UN and was administered by the United States. In 1979, the largest islands, where the bulk of the population is located, adopted a new Constitution, but gained independence only seven years later.
About 100,000 people live in the country now. Although English is recognized as the official language, residents of different islands speak nine languages. The economy is based on tourism, fishing and weaving. Financial assistance from the United States, which continues to provide military protection to Micronesia, is also considered a permanent source of income for the country.
