Luhansk City Day

On the second Saturday of September every year Luhansk celebrates City Day. It is believed that the city was founded by the order of Catherine II on November 14, 1795, when it was decided to build the first iron foundry in the south of the Russian Empire in the valley of the Luhan River, at the place of its confluence with the Vilkhova River, near the settlement of Kamiani Brid. The name of the city comes from the Luhan River. In 1882, Luhansk received the status of a city. During the times of the USSR, the city was renamed Voroshilovgrad. In 1990, the city was given back its first name, which is still used today.

It is interesting that in 1895, the iron foundry was closed, and a factory for the production of cartridges began to work in its place. After the Second World War, machine tools began to be manufactured there. This factory is also interesting in that from 1992 to 1996, the first coins of independent Ukraine were produced here in denominations of 2, 10, 25 and 50 kopecks, as well as one hryvnia.
