International Sushi Day

Every year on June 18, the world celebrates an unofficial but delicious holiday – International Sushi Day. The event was started by Chris De May in 2009 by creating a Facebook page dedicated to his favorite dish.

What is Sushi and what is it eaten with?

Sushi is a traditional Japanese dish consisting of rice, a variety of seafood or meat, often topped with herbs/seaweed and melted cheese. In European countries, such varieties of sushi as maki-zushi (twisted in a hole) and nigiri-zushi (pressed rice covered with fish) are most common. The symbol of Japanese cuisine originated in South Asia, and in the 7th century spread to Japan. Rice sushi originated in the 17th century.

  • It is interesting that in Japan, sushi is first spread with wasabi sauce, and not served separately on the table, as is customary in Europe.

How to enjoy International Sushi Day?
