International Day of Non-Binary People

Every year on July 14, the world celebrates a relatively young but important event – International Day of Non-Binary People. This date began to be celebrated in 2012.

Who are non-binary people?

Non-binary gender identity is self-awareness beyond the limits of gender binarism, that is, the traditional division of the sexes into male and female. Non-binary individuals may have multiple genders or no gender at all (agender). It should be noted that gender is not related to sexual orientation and androgyny.

Purpose of the event

the purpose International Day of Non-Binary People there is the drawing of society’s attention to the problems faced by individuals with non-binary gender; raising awareness about genderqueer (non-binary); overcoming gender discrimination.


The first non-binary people

The first person in the United States with the genderqueer designation in legal documents is James Shupe. This happened in 2016. A similar practice was started back in 2003 in Australia, when Alex McFarlane received the status of an intersex person.
