Independence Day of the Kingdom of Cambodia
For the Kingdom of Cambodia, the main national holiday is November 9 – Independence Day. In 1953, the country got rid of its colonial dependence on France and embarked on its own path of development. From the middle of the 19th century to 1942, Cambodia was a colony of the French, then it was occupied by Japanese troops, and from 1945 it again fell under the French protectorate. Since 1949, the country joined the French Union. But thanks to the national liberation movement that began in Cambodia, the kingdom became independent in 1953.
In 1958, the Independence Monument was erected in the capital of Phnom Penh in honor of this important event. Nowadays, celebrations are held near the monument in honor of the kingdom’s freedom from the rule of colonists and occupiers, in honor of Independence Day and Constitution Day. Currently, the country is a member of the United Nations and puts a lot of effort into the fight for international security and strengthening peace around the world.
