Feduli’s day
Feast of St. Feodula came to us from the era of early Christianity and is celebrated by Christians around the world on January 5. This saint was a reader at the church and became one of the most famous victims of the persecutors of the Christian faith at that time. When offered to renounce her, he chose death as a manifestation of eternal life, but with his God.
For a long time, on this date, Christians tried to attract the favor of good spirits and ward off evil ones. For this, they diligently engaged in household chores, cleaned the cattle yard, and also generously fed domestic animals. On this day, the villagers baked not only traditional fresh pastries, but also holiday cookies, which were baked in the shape of domestic animals and birds.
Immediately after it was removed from the oven, it was wrapped in rags and hid far away so that it would not be seen by the evil spirits. At the same time, cows, sheep and pigs were treated with cookies, birds were given selected grain, and the tastiest cookies were put on the table as a treat for all households. If in Fedula’s day (Feodula) happened to be blown by a strong wind, it was regarded as a good omen foretelling a future bountiful harvest.
