Day of the city of Dnipro
According to the Statute of the city adopted in 2001, the second Sunday is Saturday The city of Dnipro celebrates its birthday. The holiday has been celebrated since the end of the 20th century.
The place where the modern Dnipro now stretches has been considered favorable for living since ancient times. On the outskirts of the city and on its territory, archaeologists found settlements of people from the Stone Age, Neolithic times, nomadic tribes of Cimmerians, Scythians, and Sarmatians. Already in those days, there was a connection with the eastern part of the Mediterranean via the Dnipro River and the Black Sea.
The year 1787 is officially considered the founding period of the city. Then Catherine II ordered the construction of the Transfiguration Cathedral (construction began), and the city of Katerynoslav was moved from the lands of the destroyed Zaporizhzhya Sich to its current location on the Dnipro River. By decree of Emperor Paul, after 9 years, Katerynoslav was renamed Novorossiysk. In 1802, Alexander I returned the city to its previous name. From 1918 to 1919, the city was officially called Sicheslav, and 7 years later it became Dnipropetrovsk in honor of the communist figure Hryhori Petrovsky. According to the law on decommunization in 2016, Dnipropetrovsk became Dnipro.
