International Day of Heraldry

An international holiday dedicated to the study of heraldic signs, first celebrated on June 10, 2013. On this day in 1128, the English king Henry I of Beauclerc presented his future son-in-law Geoffrey V Plantagenet with a shield on which were depicted 3 pairs of golden lions in honor of his knighthood. Some heraldists consider this very item of warrior protection to be one of the first real coats of arms in history.

The science of heraldry

Roots of the ancient science of heraldry goes back to the Middle Ages, when there was a specially developed heraldic language. Its appearance was facilitated by the lack of education of people who remembered bright pictures better than letters. Everyone could describe the image of the noble family on whose lands he lived.
