Independence Day of the Republic of Honduras

Every year since 1821, its independence – Independence Day of the Republic of Honduras – from Spanish rule in Central America, Honduras celebrates – together with its closest neighbors.

In August 1502, during his last sea expedition to America, Christopher Columbus landed in Trujillo and immediately noted the depth of the bay. He gave the name to this area Golfo de Honduras, which means “Gulf of Deep Waters”. 3 years later, Hernán Cortés came to this area to consolidate Spanish military victories in the region, thus beginning the nearly 300-year reign of the Spanish crown.

Until 1539, Honduras belonged to the Captaincy General of Guatemala, and already in the 19th century, the Spanish colonies were on the way to gaining sovereignty. In September 1821, Honduras and several other colonies declared their independence. Although after that the country still joined Mexico and was part of the federation of the United Provinces of Central America, September 15, 1821 is considered the day of gaining sovereignty.

Now Honduras is a country where the traditions of the Indians are still honored. There is a landmark here – the ruins of Mayan buildings in Copan. Honduras also boasts the largest living coral reefs in the world that surround the country’s islands.
