World Hospice and Palliative Care Day

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is celebrated every year on the second Saturday of October. Its organizer is the World Alliance of Institutions Providing Such Services.

As a field of medicine, palliative care appeared in 1982. In Ukraine, the first hospices were opened only in 1996.

The field of palliative care covers a wide range of services for patients with terminal illnesses, most often in the last stage. Its principles are based on relief of pain, improvement of quality of life, psychological and social assistance. Specialists try to support patients as fully as possible in their last weeks or days of life. At the same time, hospices do not actually treat the disease.

This day is designed to draw society’s attention to the problems of limited access to services, lack of palliative care in some regions.
