Memorial Day of St. Theodore the Studite

According to the church calendar, Orthodox Christians celebrate February 8 Memorial Day of St. Theodore the Studite. The people called him Fyodor the Remembrancer, because it was believed that on this day the deceased miss their family, so in order to appease them, people set up a memorial table at the cemetery.

Feodor was born in 759 in the capital of Byzantium in the pious family of a wealthy official. Having received a decent education, at the age of 22 he, together with his whole family, decided to renounce the worldly life and accept tonsure in the Bethany Monastery near Mount Olympus. Over time, he was elected abbot of this monastery.

Being a zealous icon admirer and a supporter of the institution of the family, Theodore opposes the divorce of Emperor Constantine VI, who supported the iconoclasts. He went to prison for this act. Only after the death of the ruler was he released and assigned to manage the Studio Monastery.

Throughout his life, Feodor was imprisoned three times for exposing the illegal actions of the authorities of that time. Despite this, he reformed monastic life and made a significant contribution to enlightenment, writing several Catechisms and a large number of religious works.

The fighter for freedom of faith died in 826 in the Bithynian monastery, and in 845 his relics were transferred to the Studio monastery.
