Independence Day of the Republic of Colombia

Annually on July 20 Colombia notes Independence Day, because it was on this day in 1810 that a revolutionary uprising for freedom from Spain took place and a people’s junta was formed. The independence of the republic was recognized later, in 1819.

Colombia is located in South America, near the equator. The country is full of sunlight all year round and does not change seasons. The republic is washed by the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The capital of Colombia and the largest city is Bogotá, the official language is Spanish. The country’s population is more than 51 million people. The republic is known for its large-scale mining of emeralds and its coffee.

On July 20, Colombians organize mass parades and sports competitions, listen to folk music.
