Day of pulp and paper industry workers

In 2008, after considering the repeated requests of paper producers to establish their professional holiday, the President of Ukraine issued a decree according to which every year on the third Saturday of October, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Pulp and Paper Industry Workers.

The most common material in the world is paper. But the process of its production is long and wood-consuming.

  • To get 1 ton of paper products, you need to use up to 3 tons of wood.

The annual global production volume of paper products is 350 million tons. Of them, about 0.9 million tons of produced paper is accounted for by Ukrainian enterprises, which enabled the country to take 36th place in the ranking of countries producing this product.

Ukraine began to produce its own paper from rags in the 13th century. in the city of Halychi, but documents about the activity of Ukrainian paper mills have been preserved only from the 16th century. Materials were found, according to which at least 200 paper factories existed on the territory of Ukraine from the 16th to the beginning of the 20th century.

Today, there are 50 enterprises in Ukraine that produce various types of paper and cardboard. For the production of paper products, primary raw materials, i.e. cellulose, and secondary raw materials, such as waste paper, are used.

Cellulose is obtained from coniferous and deciduous wood, as well as from sawmilling and wood processing waste. Given the fact that pulp reserves are small in Ukraine, almost all enterprises produce cardboard and paper products from waste paper.
