World Fisheries Day
World Fisheries Day is held on November 21. Fishing communities, associations and unions take part in festive events. For mankind, coastal and inland fisheries are important as one of the rich sources of food. Reservoirs, rivers, lakes and oceans give people fish in huge quantities. The fishing industry employs millions of people around the world – local fishermen, processors, traders of fish and a wide range of aquatic products.
WorldFish is an international non-profit research organization. Its activities are aimed at combating poverty and hunger, introducing advanced aquaculture in countries where fishing is the main source of livelihood for the population. The organization is a member of CGIAR – the world’s largest partner in research and innovation, which is implemented to achieve food security of all countries.
Fish is an important part of the human diet. But uncontrolled fishing leads to the destruction of populations and deterioration of the ecology of sea and ocean waters. Therefore, World Fisheries Day is an opportunity to inform humanity about existing problems and call for the protection of fish stocks.
