World Afro Day

September 15 is held World Afro Day. The day was created by activist Michelle de Leon to highlight and celebrate the natural hairstyles of the black and mixed race community, which are a unique and distinctive part of the culture. Michelle de Leon started her journey in 2017 with a belief in the importance of history and heritage, with the belief that there are ways to change people’s views on Afro hair, with the desire to show others what it means to wear Afro hairstyles.

World Afro Day is now held with the support of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. As part of this holiday, activists work with the authorities, in schools and other educational institutions, with families and children to overcome discrimination against Afro-hair. Research is also being conducted and events are being organized to empower people with Afro hairstyles and raise public awareness.

This day is a good opportunity to forget about prejudices, stereotypes and discrimination and see something attractive and charming in Afro hairstyles.
