International Day for the Protection of Laboratory Animals
On April 24 every year we celebrate an important event – International Day for the Protection of Laboratory Animals. The event was initiated by the International Association Against Painful Experiments on Animals back in 1979. The idea of the holiday quickly spread around the world.
Laboratory experiments on small animals are called vivisection, it originated in the 19th century. Every year, hundreds of mice, dogs, rabbits, etc. die during experiments.
Cosmetic products lead in the number of experiments on animals, so the protection movement is largely aimed at overcoming this problem. As a result, many cosmetic brands have abandoned the use of animals. Great Britain took the most decisive action, when in 1998 it introduced a ban on this method of testing cosmetics.
