Every year, the first Friday of the last month of summer is a significant date for fans of the hoppy drink around the world. It is celebrated on this day International Beer Day. So far, the holiday has an unofficial status.

History of International Beer Day

The idea to celebrate Beer Day belongs to a bar owner from the USA, Jess Avshalomov. He decided to increase the number of visits in his establishment in this way.

This ceremony was held for the first time in 2007 in the American city of Santa Cruz. And since 2011, it has acquired an international scale. At that time, 138 cities from 23 countries of the world celebrated the holiday. A year later, the tradition was supported by more than 200 cities and fifty countries on 5 continents.


For 6 years since its inception, the event has been celebrated every year on August 5. According to the results of a survey among fans of the drink, which was conducted after the celebration in 2012, they decided to move the celebration to the first Friday of August.

  • Archaeologists have researched that people tasted the foamy drink as early as 300 BC.
  • In ancient Egypt, it was cooked from wheat, rye, oats, and in China – from sprouted rice with fruits.
  • Beer with the addition of hops began to be brewed from the 13th century, the taste was close to the modern one.
  • Until the 18th century, only women were professional brewers.
