Explanatory dictionary day
Explanatory dictionary day is an unofficial holiday celebrated annually on January 18. There is no information about the initiator and the year of the event. It is only known that the date is associated with the birthday of the British doctor and lexicographer Peter Mark Roger, creator of the Roger Thesaurus. He was born on January 18, 1779.
Roger started creating the thesaurus in 1805, and published it in 1852. The book contained about 15,000 words. The result of many years of painstaking collection of words was the first modern dictionary of synonyms, in which they were arranged by semantic categories.
After the death of the author of the thesaurus, the work was continued by his son and grandson. Today, the book consists of 23,000 words and is somewhat different from the original. But it remains one of the most famous ideographic dictionaries in use today.
Roger’s thesaurus is not the first dictionary. The famous book of synonyms, which was created by the Greek writer and historian Philo of the Bible, dates back to the 1st century. not.
