Day of the city of Uzhhorod

Day of the city of Uzhhorod are celebrated on September 10-12. Uzhhorod, the administrative center of Zakarpattia Oblast, is located on the banks of the Uzh (Ung) River. The historical name of the city is Ungvar, translated from Hungarian, the word “var” is interpreted as a fortress, a castle.

The first mention in historical sources dates back to 1154. The city was first described by the Arab geographer-traveler Al-Idrisi. However, according to archaeological data, the origin of the city dates back to the 10th – the beginning of the 11th centuries. In 1840, the modern name of the city – Uzhhorod – appeared for the first time. In June 1945, the Soviet-Czechoslovak treaty was concluded, according to which Uzhhorod was transferred to Ukraine and became the regional center of the Zakarpattia region.

  • In the city, filled with greenery, there is the longest linden alley in Europe – 2200 meters.
