Day of the city of Lutsk

Birthday of the city of Lutsk Volyn region of Ukraine celebrates on the third Sunday of August. It is a beautiful city with unique architecture, ancient history, and spiritual wealth. According to historical sources, Lutsk was founded by Dulibs in the 7th century, but there is also information that the city was founded by Volodymyr the Great around 1000. It is known for certain that in 1085 this glorious city had strong fortifications and worthily resisted a six-year siege by Boleslav the Brave.

The history of the city is ambiguous and eventful. Lutsk was the capital of the Galicia-Volyn principality in 1340. The residence of Prince Lyubart was built here – the Lutskyi Castle. At that time, military fortifications were built in the city from bricks instead of wood, so the city was able to withstand enemy sieges for a long time.

In 1429, European monarchs gathered in Lutsk to reach an agreement on the issue of protection from the Ottomans. Three years later, the city received Magdeburg law, which had a positive effect on economic, social and political development. In 1569, Lutsk came under the rule of Poland and became the center of the Voivodeship. From 1795 to 1918, the settlement was under Russian rule and became a district town of the Volyn province. Later, after the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact between Germany and the Soviet Union, Lutsk became part of the Ukrainian SSR.
