Day of the city of Kropyvnytskyi

Every year on the third Saturday of September residents of Kropyvnytskyi celebrate city daywhich changed its name several times during its history.

According to historical documents, the construction of the fortress, which later turned into the city of Elizavetgrad, began in 1752. At first, it had great strategic importance, so it quickly grew and attracted whole detachments of Cossacks, as well as a large number of colonists – Germans, Serbs and Croats.

But at the end of the 18th century, thanks to the shift of the border to the south, the fortress lost its importance. In 1924, the city was renamed to Zinovievsk, then to Kirovo, and in 1939 it was named Kirovograd. In accordance with the decommunization in 2016, the city was given the name Kropyvnytskyi in honor of the playwright and writer Mark Kropyvnytskyi. It was in this city that a theatrical play was shown for the first time in the history of Ukraine. It was Natalka Poltavka, staged by Mark Kropyvnytskyi. September 16 is considered the birthday of professional Ukrainian theater and sometimes coincides with the day of the city.
