Cherkasy City Day

Glorious Cherkasy celebrate City Day on the first Sunday of June. Every year, in honor of the holiday, solemn mass events take place here, so that residents do not forget their history and are proud of it.

According to some sources, the day of the city falls on the third Sunday of September. But according to the official Charter of the Territorial Community of Cherkasy dated July 16, 2007 and later additions to it, the celebration takes place on the first Sunday of June.

History of the city of Cherkasy

Nice city Cherkasy was founded on the bank of the Dnieper in 1286. The first written evidence about the city dates back to 1395 in the Suprasl Chronicle, it is also mentioned in the label of Khan Mengli-Girey from 1507. In 1482, Cherkasy did not submit to the Crimean Tatar horde, which devastated Ukrainian lands and captured 11 cities from Kyiv to Zhytomyr.

Cherkasy played a significant role in the national liberation struggle of the Ukrainian people against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth under the leadership of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. Even before the founding of Zaporizhzhya Sich, the Cherkasy elder Ostafii Dashkevich developed a project of defensive structures on the banks of the Dnieper and submitted it to the Lithuanian Diet. The idea was implemented and Cherkasy became one of the most powerful centers of the Cossack republic of that time. The city has been celebrating its day magnificently and solemnly for 735 years in a row.
