Memorial day of the martyrs Leontius, Hypatius and Theodulus
1st of July – Memorial day of the martyrs Leontius Hypatius and Theodulusholy martyrs according to the Christian religious calendar.
Leontius, Hypatius and Theodulus were soldiers of Rome. Leontius held a high position in Tripoli. He helped the sick and the poor, distinguished himself by his wisdom, and won the respect of the residents. Leontius was a good Christian and opposed the worship of idols.
At that time, Senator Adrian lived in Tripoli, who was a wicked man. When it was reported that the soldier Leontius was preaching Christianity, Hadrian sent his tribune Hypatius to him. The task of the tribune was to capture and keep Leontius in custody. During the journey, Hypatius became seriously ill and there was almost no hope of recovery. Then, in the feverish passion of the tribune, he saw an angel who ordered him to say three times the name of the Lord, in whom Leontius believed.
Hypatius told the soldiers about his vision. Among them was Theodulus, who persuaded the tribune to find Leontius. They went to the city, found the saint and asked him to reveal to them the true faith in God. Leontius made a prayer invocation over Hypatius and Theodulus, after which blessed rain fell on the earth.
Hadrian, having learned about such events, became angry, ordered to brutally torture the faithful if they did not renounce their faith. But the holy martyrs did not surrender. Hanging on a stake, Hypatius was scraped with iron claws, Theodulus was beaten with sticks.
Leontius was tortured and then sent to prison. The man remained faithful to his religion, so the holy martyr was tortured again – hung upside down with a stone around his neck and beaten with sticks until he died. The body of Leontius was thrown outside the city gate, but the faithful buried him with honors near Tripoli.
