On this day in 1914, Germany began military operations against the Russian Empire.
The world was divided into two hostile camps. On one side was Germany and its allies, and on the other was the Entente, which was joined by the USA, China, Japan, Italy and some other countries.

- In the less than five years that the war lasted, more than 20 million people died, and even more were left destitute and orphaned.
- About a million Ukrainians died.
