Memorial Day of the Holy Martyr Clement of Rome

Memorial Day of the Holy Martyr Clement of Rome is commemorated on December 8. Saint Clement served as the fourth Pope of Rome and preached Christian teachings to the people. He became a companion of the holy apostle Peter, but because of his religious views he was sent into exile, to the limestone mines. There the hieromartyr Clement found like-minded people who preached Christianity together with him. Legends say that the archbishop cut out the temple with his own hands in the thickness of the mighty limestone rock.

By order of the emperor, he was sentenced to martyrdom – drowning in the sea. Since that time, according to belief, sea waves receded each time so that believers could honor the relics of the righteous. The relics of the hieromartyr Clement of Rome are located in the Far Caves of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
