Cathedral of the 70 Apostles
What day is it?
Orthodox churchmen established January 17 as A day of respect Cathedral of the 70 Holy Apostlesin order to prevent disagreement in their respect and to remind of the equality of each of them.
How did the idea of celebrating the Council of the 70 Apostles come about?
Before his last sermon in Galilee, Christ chose 70 apostles. Unlike the 12 evangelists, these apostles had the temporary assignment of “heralds.” Their mission was to spread the word about the coming of Christ. Two of them went around the cities and preached the Gospel.
Cathedral of the 70 Apostles consisted of those who had seen or heard the Lord and their followers. Some of the 70 messengers were disciples of the twelve apostles and accompanied them. Among them are the followers of the evangelist Paul – Timothy, Luke, Titus, Saint Mark, the disciple of the Apostle John the Theologian – Saint Prokhor. Many of them were arrested for their preaching and martyred.
After the Holy Spirit descended, the apostles began to preach throughout the world. The main merit of the 70 apostles is that they initiated the veneration of the Holy Trinity.
